Larned State Hospital
301,000 SF | 250 Beds | Design through Construction | Multi-Classification Psychiatric Services | Design-Bid-Build
LARNED, KANSAS, USA As the associate architect, KMD provided program verification, planning, and design for the new State Security Hospital at Larned State Hospital. The ADA compliant facility has three residential communities, small infirmary, consolidation of existing programs, and Kansas Department of Corrections 90-bed addition. The residential communities are composed of two treatment communities serving male patients referred from Kansas District Courts and Kansas Department of Corrections; and one community housing three units: 30-bed forensic evaluation, 20-bed female evaluation and treatment, and 20-bed security behavior. Security is centered on the line-of-sight theory and emphasis on a strong, external security perimeter, various levels of internal security and patient privilege/reward systems. The new Hospital achieves the following objectives: consolidation of programs into one facility, transforms staff time to active treatment in client interaction, produces cost savings from reduced need for outside hospitalization, modernizes allied clinical operations to take advantage of emerging and new technologies, and facilitates expansion of the Sexual Predator Treatment Program.
