Coalinga State Hospital

1.2M SF | 1,500 Beds | Housing & Treatment Facility | Evidence Based/Therapeutic Design
COALINGA, CALIFORNIA, USA KMD designed the State of California's new $302 million, 1.2 million square foot, standalone housing and treatment facility. The facility program was extremely complex and led to the design of what we refer to as a 'village' composition. This project represented a new paradigm in the design of a public mental health facility (the largest of its kind in the United States). The 1,500-bed secure treatment facility represents 'best practices' for a treatment environment and incorporated the concepts of evidence-based and humanistic design as a platform for the project's development and execution.
