RICHLAND, WASHINGTON, USA Winner of a national design-build competition, KMD Architects' design combines the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Biological Sciences Facility and Computational Sciences Facility. The Battelle Foundation operates the laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. The two buildings are connected by a two-story, transparent atrium that provides shared common spaces where researchers from both facilities can collaborate and share ideas.
